A jurisdiction refers to the area where the health department has authority. Most health departments operate at a local jurisdiction level (e.g., city or county). There are over 2,000 health departments and Department of Agriculture agencies in the US and Canada. These entities are each responsible for the health inspections of all applicable establishments that fall within their jurisdiction.
